Where VADOC Releases Go
VADOC operates state prisons and community corrections across Virginia, not a Frederick County jail. A defendant can disappear from the NRADC roster because VADOC accepted state custody. The local transfer date ends the NRADC episode but does not mark return to the community. Later, a person may leave a state institution on sentence discharge, conditional release, or parole, or move into probation or parole supervision. A supervision entry means the person is outside prison yet still under VADOC authority.
Read each status literally. Institution or hospital placement shows state confinement. Community Corrections Alternative Program and probation or parole district entries describe other VADOC statuses. A historical release or discharge label can document the end of a state episode, while a future date remains prospective. If another detainer takes effect, the person may leave VADOC without entering the community.
Confirm a VADOC Release
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator is the correct first search for a state prisoner or current state supervisee. It is not a complete archive of short NRADC stays or every fully discharged person. VADOC states that data is updated daily but may be inaccurate or outdated.
Use the locator in a set order:
- Accept the official disclaimer and search with at least the first three letters of the first name plus the full last name, or a seven-digit DOC ID.
- Use optional location, race, gender, and age-range filters only to distinguish common names.
- Record the DOC number, status wording, institution or supervision location, and any date label exactly as shown.
- Compare the result with the sentencing court and the NRADC transfer record.
- Request VADOC custody-status and release documents when the result is absent or unclear.
A no-result cannot prove release. The Frederick County release search provides the local court, VINE, and records-request paths when state custody is uncertain.

VADOC Completed Release Proof
A prospective date is not proof that release occurred. Sentence recalculation, earned-credit changes, discipline, additional sentences, detainers, court orders, and parole action can alter it. VADOC's facility-release information says a person satisfying the sentence is discharged or leaves on parole and receives a notification-of-release letter. Applicable Orders of Release and Conditions of Probation or Parole are read and signed with staff.
Those completed-event documents outweigh an old estimate. VADOC says facility release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the scheduled date, weather permitting. That statewide statement should not be confused with NRADC's separate local statement that scheduled jail releases start at 5:00 a.m. Different custodians and processes control each event.

Ask for the existing custody-status record, release or discharge event, notification-of-release letter, and releasable order or conditions. Request an estimate before added cost.
Frederick VADOC Supervision
State probation and parole after a Frederick case are handled by VADOC Community Corrections. The research identifies Winchester Probation and Parole District 11 as serving Winchester and Frederick, Clarke, Warren, and Shenandoah Counties. Its current listing should be verified in the VADOC facilities and offices directory.
A district result confirms present supervision at the time checked, not the exact prison-exit time and not unconditional discharge. The Virginia Parole Board decides discretionary parole for eligible people, while VADOC carries out release processing and day-to-day supervision. A Board grant may precede physical release because planning, notice, detainers, and processing remain.
Local ODCS supervision is different. A person on Frederick local probation may never appear in VADOC. Read the court order before deciding which office should have the record.
NRADC Versus VADOC Records
The two systems document separate custody terms. NRADC can show the booking, local confinement, and transfer date. VADOC can show state intake, institutional or supervision status, and later state release. A person serving a wholly local sentence may never enter the VADOC locator. Conversely, a state-responsible person can be physically held in a local or regional jail while VADOC holds sentence authority.

Record both dates when the chain crosses systems. Calling the NRADC transfer date the VADOC release date reverses the event and can falsely suggest that confinement ended.
VADOC Release Date Limits
VADOC's static locator page does not establish the exact literal date label shown on every live result. The current result must be read and transcribed as displayed. Do not silently rename a date as projected, tentative, or estimated. Any future date applies only to sentence information VADOC holds and can change before the completed release event.
Virginia earned-credit rules depend on offense date, offense eligibility, sentence type, classification, discipline, and other legal factors. VADOC separates Good Conduct Allowance from Earned Sentence Credits. It calculates qualifying active state sentences, while local jail credit policy controls some shorter local terms. Additional sentences, amended orders, detainers, lost or restored credit, and administrative correction can move a date.
For a person already out of a state institution, ask for the completed custody-status record and notification-of-release letter. If probation or parole follows, the signed conditions and district record define the remaining authority. A projected locator date is useful context, but it cannot replace those completed-event records. Note the date on which the locator was checked because later recalculation can change what appears.
Frederick VADOC Court Check
The sentencing judgment identifies active terms, consecutive sentences, and later amendments that can affect state computation. Compare it with VADOC rather than asking the clerk to certify a prison exit processed by corrections. When sources differ, a completed VADOC custody event carries more weight than an earlier calculation.
VADOC Release Evidence Order
When state records disagree, rank a completed release document above a former projected date. A signed Order of Release, conditions document, notification-of-release letter, or custody-status event records what VADOC completed. The locator remains useful for current institution or district status, but a daily public result can lag or omit a fully discharged historical episode.
Preserve the DOC number across every check. It links the state term more reliably than a name and separates the VADOC episode from the earlier NRADC booking. Record the precise institution or supervision district, displayed status, date wording, retrieval date, and source URL. If the person transferred again, identify the receiving custodian rather than describing the state release as return to Frederick County.
A VADOC supervisee result proves current state supervision at retrieval. It does not reveal the exact prison gate time or mean discretionary parole caused release. The sentencing law, offense date, release documents, and district record determine those points.
VADOC's daily update statement does not make the public locator a minute-by-minute release log. A result checked near a transfer or release can trail the operational event. Call the listed institution or district when immediate confirmation is necessary, then request the completed record for a durable answer. Keep VINE and NAAVI distinct as well. Registration in one system does not automatically carry into the other.
